Check out the latest WDSR Radio – Donny Staten Interview

WDSR Radio – Donny Staten InterviewWDSR: Welcome Donny Staten! It’s a pleasure to interview you. So I guess it’s not too hard to figure out where you are from based on the name right? … lol However let everyone know where you are from and how old you were when you first developed an interest in making music?

Donny Staten: It all started when mommy was pregnant, i used the embilical chord as a microphone , I couldn’t speak english so i just beatboxxed at the time lol. No but I always loved music but growing up I didn’t get into a real studio until age 13

WDSR: So tell us about Donny Staten. What was it like growing up as a kid in Staten Island, NY?

Donny Staten: It’s not all glitter , you know ..Don’t get me wrong some people in Shaolin are all for good ,all about team work …but on the other hand you got the demons shooting in broad daylight, breaking into there closest friends house or even mother. Not to mention the number of documented and undocumented cop killing’s. My family knew Eric Garner, it was extremly sad watching it on the news but in all Staten created me …I am Staten Island …If you just punched me in the face , then you just punched the whole Staten Island in the face .

WDSR: So it says that you are associated with the World famous Wu-Tang Clan. How did that come about?

Donny Staten: can say im associated ..I wouldn’t say that though I would go for more of bloodline type word . People know im Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s cousin but what alot of people don’t know is GZA & RZA are all in the family too .Peace to the God’s..If it wasn’t for the Gawd , my bloodline wouldn’t hold the weight it does..and it DOES hold weight . Definitely a big inspiration watching these guys like Ghostface or Killah Preist .Peace to those Gods too.

WDSR: Let’s talk about the music. If you had to put a description on the type of music that Donny Staten makes, in comparison to Wu-tang how would you describe it to someone who has never heard it before?

Donny Staten: Don Staten music IS Wu-Tang music, because i’m Wutang. That’s what people fail to realize, that’s why Young Dirty Bastard has to deal with so much shit! You can’t take the Wu-Tang out of us …WE ARE WUTANG! As an example , you can’t hear a brand new 50 Cent song and just because it doesn’t sound like vintage 50 say its someone else. The day this world realizes that my music ,our music rather, is Wu-tang will be the day they actually look into the lyrics and hear what the fuck it is were saying .

WDSR: The name Donny Staten is of course a play on word about NY but tell us about the significance of that name?

Donny Staten: That name took alot of changing to get where it is today. The idea was actually given to me by a friend of mine JClowd , it began as Kid Staten. Later I changed it to Staten The Don , then as my respect grew in Shaolin and everywhere it slowly came to The Don Staten . Donny is the alter ego of Don Staten , the Slim to Eminem if you will .

WDSR: If you could put together the ultimate concert with Donny Staten headlining and other major artists, who would you choose?

Donny Staten: I want to say ODB ,but since that can’t happen because of obvious reasons i would first have the original WU-Tang Clan members perform to jump it off, The Lox would kill it followed by Slick Rick and Mos Def playing Auditorium , Later to end the show off I Would have all the best next genereation Wu-Tang artist kill a cypher one by one expressing our talents to the legendary artist sitting in the crowd.

WDSR: Walk us through a typical day of what it takes for Donny Staten to prepare for a release of a new single or album.

Donny Staten: I meditate and listen to soul , James Brown, Bill Withers, Arethra Franklin, Al Green all people I can hear 1,000,000 times over and over and over again and never get bored with . There music has meaning and purpose and is definitely something I try to emulate when making a hit song.

WDSR: What new projects can we expect from Donny Staten in the near future?

Donny Staten: Yes. Im doing a collaboration mixtape actually with Compton’s finest singers they call her Alli Cat.. everybody in La & Ny go cop that when it comes out …matter of fact ,by the time you read this it probably will have been out.

WDSR: NY is the capitol of artists both indie and existing. Do they give indies a fair shake when it comes to locking down venues?

Donny Staten: Umm.. to be completely honest they really don’t to alot of these local artist its pretty sad to have to tell one of your best friends he can’t WDSR Radio – Donny Staten Interviewperform the show with you. I might get alot of respect..i don’t know, because of the bloodline maybe…but for an average artist trying to work from the bottom its hard .

WDSR: For everyone that doesn’t know, let them know where they can we find your music online?

Donny Staten: Ok..umm ..they can search my name Don Staten , Next Generation Wu-Tang , I have a Soundcloud , Youtube, Etc. All you have to do is search Don Staten or Donny Staten

WDSR: We ask everyone that we interview, what’s the best piece of advice that someone has ever given to you about this music game?

Donny Staten: Its hard to really narrow it down but at the moment the most valuable piece of information ever said to me is when my Uncle Azmar ,(this was sometime after He Can Rap dropped) that I’m already the greatest but they don’t know it yet, those words will forever spin around in my head. I actually mentioned that inspiration in “a Nice Flow + A Nice Beat” . Go Check That Out

WDSR: Is there anything else that you would like to include in the closing of this interview?

Donny Staten: Big shoutsout to the Gawd Dirty doing his thing ,RZA , shoutout to TyFlow, iNTeLL , Big shoutsout to my brown skin mami on the east side , and New York ,I Love You Keep Ya Heads up!
